Edlira Tam, DO

Edlira Tam, DO, MS, FACC serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and is an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiologist at Stony Brook Heart Institute. In addition to her clinical role, she holds key positions as the Associate Director of the Ventricular Assist Device/Mechanical Circulatory Support program and the Associate Director of the Cardiogenic Shock program.
Within her outpatient practice, Dr. Tam specializes in managing patients with heart failure, complex valve and coronary diseases, as well as various cardiomyopathies. Her expertise extends to the evaluation of advanced therapies, including ventricular assist devices and heart transplants.
Dr. Tam's research is dedicated to the application of temporary mechanical circulatory support devices in patients with cardiogenic shock. She has also contributed significantly to the field of pericardial disease, collaborating with Dr. Allan Klein, an internationally recognized authority on pericarditis. In her administrative role, Dr. Tam oversees the quality measures within the VAD/Mechanical Circulatory Support program.
Beyond her clinical and research commitments, Dr. Tam is a highly regarded educator. She plays a pivotal role in training residents and fellows, showcasing her commitment to advancing medical education.
Dr. Tam's academic journey includes an undergraduate degree with honors cum laude from Queens College, as well as a Master in Science and a DO from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her residency was completed at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, followed by a Cardiology Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center, where she served as Chief Cardiology Fellow. Subsequently, she pursued Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship training at Montefiore Medical Center before joining the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stony Brook in 2021.
