Kathleen E Walsh-Spoonhower, MD

Dr. Kathleen Walsh-Spoonhower completed a residency in pediatrics at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore and fellowship in pediatric cardiology at The Children's Hospital of NY-Presbyterian (Columbia/Cornell). Her practice includes patients with congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, and acquired heart disease, like Kawasaki disease. She is available to see patients with concerns such as chest pain, fainting, or palpitations. She also contributes to Stony Brook’s Comprehensive Fetal Care Program by seeing pregnant patients for their fetal echocardiograms and providing counseling for those families who have a fetus with a prenatally diagnosed heart problem. Dr. Walsh-Spoonhower finds joy in being able to care for her patients prenatally and postnatally, helping to coordinate plans for needed heart surgery to help her patients grow up to be healthy, active children. Dr. Walsh-Spoonhower contributes to the research collaborative, the New York Congenital Heart Surgical Collaborative for Longitudinal Outcomes and Utilization of Resources, which fosters research to examine why disparities exist in outcomes for children undergoing heart surgery. The goal of this research is to better understand what happens to children long-term after their heart surgery so that the medical community can learn where inequities exist and then intervene to improve the health of these children.
