About Peter G Michaelson

About

Long Island native, Peter G. Michaelson, MD, FACS, is board certified in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. He earned his undergraduate degree from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and initially served as a physicist before entering medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. There, he graduated with the Top Medical Student Award. He completed his Otolaryngology residency at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) in San Antonio, Texas. He was later assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where he served as Chief of Head and Neck Surgery from 2008 to 2016.

"After serving over 20 years as a private practice, military, and hospital-based ENT physician, I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to return home and care for the community where I grew up, which helped shape me into the physician and surgeon that I am,” said Dr. Michaelson. “As an ear, nose and throat specialist, I am grateful for the chance to help others breathe easier, to improve my patients' quality of life, and give back in a meaningful way to the place I've always called home."

In addition to his medical accomplishments, Dr. Michaelson retired from the United States Air Force Air National Guard in March 2024 as a Colonel and Senior Flight Surgeon. His 33 years of honorable service—including 16 years on active duty, more than a decade in the Air Guard, and over 100 flying combat hours—were recognized with numerous decorations and accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Air Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal with combat deployment device, among many others.

An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Michaelson values time spent with his family and is deeply committed to bringing his extensive clinical and surgical experience to Stony Brook Medicine’s patients.
