About Wayne Waltzer

About

Dr. Wayne Waltzer is a board-certified urologist specializing in renal transplantation and urologic oncology. He is a professor and chairman of the Department of Urology and the Director of Renal Transplant at Stony Brook University Hospital. In addition, Dr. Waltzer is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. He completed his Residency training at the University of Pittsburgh and Fellowship training in kidney transplant surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He participated in the first kidney transplant performed on Long Island at Stony Brook in 1982.

Dr. Waltzer pursued a career in urology and renal transplantation to have the opportunity to treat patients with a wide variety of complex urological disorders and kidney diseases. He currently performs renal transplants and treats conditions such as kidney cancer, ureteral cancer, bladder cancer, testicular cancer, and prostate cancer. Additionally, he manages complex cases requiring reconstructive surgery of the urinary tract. As part of his armamentarium, he uses advanced techniques such as the DaVinci robot to perform such surgeries.

Dr. Waltzer promotes clinical research in urology at Stony Brook and actively participates in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings to provide optimal care for patients with cancer. These meetings combine the expertise of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to develop comprehensive treatment plans.

Under Dr. Waltzer's guidance, the Department of Urology has greatly expanded and developed a robust urology residency program. In addition, fellowship programs in Female Urology, Men's Health, and Endourology have also been obtained. These programs aim to equip resident graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve certification by the American Board of Urology and to provide state-of-the-art patient care throughout their careers.
