Alexandra Donnelly, DO

Dr. Alex Donnelly is an Emergency Medicine physician at Stony Brook University Hospital and fellowship-trained in Hospice & Palliative Care Medicine. She graduated from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has a strong commitment to integrating primary palliative care into emergency settings. Her guiding vision is to bridge the gap between critical care, geriatrics, and palliative medicine; ensuring that every seriously ill patient receives compassionate, goal-centered care from the moment they arrive to the Emergency Department.

During her residency at Stony Brook, Dr. Donnelly served as a Quality Assurance & Patient Safety Chief Resident, leading efforts to refine clinical processes, improve patient safety, and elevate communication under crisis. Her fellowship deepened her skills in symptom management, advanced care planning, and family-centered decision making-particularly relevant in the ED's critical care and geriatric sections, where early palliative interventions can be transformative.

Dr. Donnelly finds deep fulfillment in serving her community, completing her residency and fellowship training here in her hometown. She believes that embedding palliative principles in emergency medicine, especially for elderly patients and those in high-acuity critical care, can not only ease suffering but improve quality of life, respect patient preferences, and guide better outcomes. Through education, mentorship, and quality improvement initiatives, she aims to empower her colleagues and trainees to deliver care that is both lifesaving when needed and humane always.
