My interest lies in helping women with comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, HTN, substance abuse issues and victims of rape/sexual abuse/domestic violence through the prenatal and postpartum periods. I truly believe that assistance and proper education including breastfeeding education needs to be offered and provided during prenatal care to improve patient outcomes. By reaching out to pregnant women as early as possible, they can make their health and their unborn child’s health priority. By providing proper education and resources on preconception, premature birth, birth defects, genetic screening, and immunizations to pregnant women, I hope to promote healthy behaviors and improve birth outcomes. As a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner on the mother-baby unit, I strive to provide my patients with the necessary education so that they can feel comfortable making an informed decision regarding their care.

In the future of this profession, I would like to see WHNPs practicing more independently in the primary care setting. I would like to see WHNPs advocating for their patients, themselves and for this profession, especially knowing the important role we play as part of the healthcare team. I would also like to see WHNPs specializing in areas where their interest lies and doing what they enjoy doing the most. I also hope to see WHNPs continuing their education and participating in quality improvement and research projects which can bring positive change to our practice. There is so much knowledge and talent within our profession. I look forward to seeing WHNPs continuing to shine.
