Dr. Deborah M. Weisbrot is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at Stony Brook University Medical Center and Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Weisbrot graduated from Cornell University, College of Arts and Sciences and medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She completed her psychiatric residency at the Yale School of Medicine, and her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at Cornell University School of Medicine, Payne Whitney Clinic. She is the 2021 recipient of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrys Sydney Berman award for demonstration of outstanding achievement in school-based study. Dr. Weisbrots current clinical work is focused upon work in schools through her full-time role as a consulting psychiatrist for two Western Suffolk BOCES therapeutic schools for children and adolescents. Prior to taking on the school consultation role, she was the Director of the Stony Brook Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic for 16 years. Her clinical and research has focused on threat assessment in children and adolescents and upon psychiatric aspects of neurologic conditions in both children and adults. She has published and lectured nationally on issues related to threat assessment, mood and anxiety disorders and psychiatric comorbidities of neurological disorders. Dr. Weisbrot is a co-editor of the text, Neurologic Differential Diagnosis (Cambridge University Press, 2014) and Synopsis of Neurology, Psychiatry and Related Systemic Disorders (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and a guide for patients entitled The Essential Patient Handbook (Demos Medical 2004). She was the APA Assembly Representative from the Greater Long Island Psychiatric Society for many years. She has also been frequently cited in New York Magazines, and Long Island Newsdays Best Doctors lists. Most recently, Dr. Weisbrot has also been working on the critical public health issue of gun safety. She is a founding member of the group, Doctors for Gun Safety, https://doctors4gunsafety.org. Dr. Weisbrot is also a Red Cross Disaster Mental Health volunteer and a member of the Long Island School Practitioners Action Network (LISPAN).
