Haksoo Kim, NP

Becoming a nurse was a conviction for me. My father passed away when I was 11 years old, was loved by him the most. His passing happened so fast, he was sent to hospital in the afternoon, and heard my mother’s wailing that night, I prayed and wished to help sick people, so they do not die like my father did. After taking a chance to study in the US for BSN degree in 1990, I earned BSN from LIU in 1992 and NYS RN license in 1991. My Nursing career started with intensive care unit then transitioned to nephrology unit in 1993 which I found immense depth in the field, experienced management of different AKI cases as well as CKD/ESRD cases. I always enjoyed learning something new and embracing new challenges. In 2003, I helped relaunch the home dialysis unit in Flushing hospital as the only nurse. I became passionate about educating patients on CKD and its management. Since then, I have been educating CKD stage IV -V patients on CKD disease management, Diet, Treatment Options utilizing my nephrology experiences. I earned Master’s degree in Adult-Geriatric Health, NP program from Stony Brook School of Nursing in 2019. I was a Home Dialysis Nurse Manager since 2018 at NYP Queens, and joined Stony Brook Nephrology in 2020. I enjoy helping patients to make informed decisions on their treatment options and helping to manage CKD disease to slow the progression of CKD.
