Ji Dong Bai, MD

Dr. Bai is a Professor in the Department of Cell Systems and Anatomy at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Her lab is interested in mitochondrial function at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and animal levels. She has about 25 years of experience in the field of mitochondrial biology, mitochondrial genetics, and bioenergetics since my postdoctoral years with Dr. Giuseppe Attardi at Caltech. The research performed over the last 19 years in her lab at UTHSCSA has centered on the regulation of mitochondrial function, the implications of mitochondrial DNA mutations and mitochondrial dysfunction in various human diseases and aging. Our research has been supported by NIH, AHA, Ellison Medical Foundation, UMDF, Wendy Will Case Cancer Fund, Owens Medical Foundation, Morrison Trust and Baptist Health Foundation. Overall past 20 years at San Antonio, Besides PhD students and postdoctoral fellows enrolled at UTH SA, she also have mentored 3 junior faculty members, 1 medical resident fellow, 4 medical students, 5 international PhD students who registered at other universities, 8 master students, 8 summer undergraduate students and 4 high school research program students. She had published over 90 papers together with these fellows in various journals. Among these trainees, five are now faculty members in US, India, Nigeria and China; three are senior research scientist in other U.S. institutions.
