Helping children get better, and return to school and regular activities, is why being a pediatric general surgeon is the best job in the world. After having a chance to observe the great work my mentors were doing, I became convinced this was the path for me. Since completing my training, I have been working in this role for the last two decades and have helped thousands of children.
When surgery is necessary, I try to make sure that the child and caregiver are full participants in the decision-making process. No one wants to have an operation but, when one is needed, it's important that everyone understands what will happen, so it won't be too scary.
Another aspect of my practice that I have found important for my patients and their families is to make sure that we provide care as close to home and as convenient as possible. While we can't be everywhere in the community, I strongly believe that outreach clinics provide better access to care for children and their parents. Minimizing time away from school and work are vitally important, and the less burden we make for families the better. As a result, I also believe that Telehealth is a method that we can use more often to truly eliminate travel, if possible.
As a father of two children, I have had some great interactions with healthcare providers. My goal is to always provide the outstanding care to my patients that I would expect for my own children.
