About
I have been practicing ophthalmology for almost 15 years and truly enjoy my specialty as a Vitreoretinal Surgeon. I know from personal experience how losing your vision can severely affect your activities of daily living leading to severe depression and extreme difficulty taking care of yourself. Blindness can alter the trajectory of patients' lives in a massive way. I think of every patient as someone that could be a part of my family, which means I listen closely to their ailments, treat them with the same respect as I would a family member. What I love most about Ophthalmology, especially Retinal Surgery is that we are in a great position to directly help people. We can perform surgery that will improve or give people their vision back if it’s been lost to certain causes. We can also identify vision threatening diseases early and steer people in the right direction so that they have the best chance of keeping their sight and lead fruitful lives. Patients are incredibly grateful for taking care of their sight and the appreciation is delightfully rewarding. I specialize in treating potentially blinding conditions such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration (both wet and dry), artery and vein occlusion, diseases of the macula and many others.
I have an interest in helping patients regain vision with prosthetic implants such the Argus Retinal Prosthesis. I have worked with companies to surgically place retinal prosthetic devices in patients with no vision at all. When the device is on, these patients are able to make out doorways, people and objects under different lighting settings. This is an immense improvement from seeing nothing at all. I chose Vitreoretinal Surgery due to my fascination with the combination of technology and physiology along my desire to understand how we rely on visual input to function daily. The intense focus and attention to detail required in treating diseases of the retina is what drives my continued passion.
I attained my undergraduate degree at Stony Brook University prior to going to Georgetown University for Medical School and went back to Long Island for my training. My whole family lives on Long Island from West Nassau out to eastern Long Island. Its where I have always called home and hope to be here and continue to raise my children with my wife for as long as possible.
