About
Lasha Gogokhia, MD, MSc, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
Dr. Gogokhia is a gastroenterologist with a focused clinical practice in inflammatory bowel disease, with expertise in the complex and multidisciplinary management of patients requiring coordinated medical, endoscopic, surgical, nutritional, and supportive care. He cares for patients with ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, pouchitis, and complex colitis variants, including postoperative IBD management, dysplasia surveillance, and intestinal failure and malabsorption syndromes such as short bowel syndrome and bile acid diarrhea. His clinical expertise further includes microscopic colitis (lymphocytic and collagenous) and other immune-mediated gastrointestinal disorders, including immune checkpoint inhibitor–associated colitis (colitis related to cancer therapy), celiac disease, eosinophilic and lymphocytic gastroenteritis, cystic fibrosis–associated gut inflammation, and infectious complications such as Clostridioides difficile infection
Dr. Gogokhia completed his gastroenterology fellowship with advanced training in inflammatory bowel disease at Weill Cornell Medicine–NewYork Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, where he trained as a T32 research fellow and earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Investigation. His research focuses on translating emerging scientific discoveries into more individualized and effective care for patients with IBD. He studies why patients respond differently to therapies, how the gut microbiome and diet influence disease activity and treatment outcomes, and how biomarkers can be used to predict flares and guide more personalized and effective treatment decisions.
At Stony Brook, Dr. Gogokhia is a core faculty member in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, where he is leading the development of an integrated IBD research program and biobank to advance precision medicine and improve long-term outcomes for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
