About
I have a personal history of experiencing asthma myself and my children with all it requires to manage this condition throughout childhood into adult life. This led me to pursue my specialty area of practice in pulmonary and allergy so I could make a difference in children's lives who have asthma the way this was offered to me as a child. I wanted to help the families and patients learn how to reduce the risks for poorly controlled asthma, so they learn to live with asthma they can manage. I use the American Lung Association (ALA) motto, "If you can’t breathe nothing else matters." I have participated in a number of research and quality improvement (QI) projects, and my focus is specialized in asthma care and asthma education. I am a licensed Nurse Practitioner in Child and Adult Health, a nationally certified pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP-PC) and an asthma educator (AE-C). I have worked almost 40 years at Stony Brook in the Department of Pediatrics, initially as a PICU nurse and then, after further education, I began my nurse practitioner career in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Pulmonary and Allergy in 1999. My clinical experience spans throughout the various levels of patient care acuity and encounters from critical and acute care to outpatient and home care. I have opportunities to co-author abstracts, articles, posters and protocols, and I have worked in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, community and national organizations to create asthma education health fairs, education programs, educational tools and resources that have been used for many years with the patients at Stony Brook as well as community. I have been a university adjunct clinical instructor and NP student preceptor at the Stony Brook School of Nursing, initially with the undergraduate nursing program, then transitioned to the graduate level Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program. I am a lifelong resident of Suffolk County, New York with generations of family also residing here.
