Marie Gelato, MD

Dr. Gelato is a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor and a tenured Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology at Stony Brook University. She was the Director of the Master’s Program for Clinical Research and was the General Clinical Research Center Program Director for many years. She has over 30 years’ experience doing investigator initiated patient oriented research in the areas of pituitary disorders and later, insulin resistance in the elderly and patients with HIV disease. Her research was funded by the National Institutes of Health for several  years. She was a member of the FDA Advisory Panel for Endocrine and Metabolic Drugs and still serves as an ad hoc member. Dr. Gelato (5/2017) was appointed to the FDA Advisory Committee for Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology and Medical Devices. She was President of the Association for Patient Oriented Research (APOR) and has served on the Board of Directors for the Association for Clinical and Translational Science.
In addition to her career as a clinical investigator, Dr. Gelato has been a dedicated teacher to medical students, residents and fellows. She has been the Director of the Endocrine Pathophysiology course for second year medical students for over a decade. Additionally, as a practicing clinician she strives to deliver exceptional, compassionate care to her patients.  Her clinical practice includes thyroid, pituitary, calcium disorders, osteoporosis, and adrenal diseases. She brings a vast experience and knowledge base to her patients. Dr. Gelato has been recognized for her clinical acumen locally and nationally.
