Matthew J Sherman, DO

Dr. Matthew J. Sherman is an attending psychiatrist and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He completed medical school training at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. He then went on to complete his Psychiatry residency training at Stony Brook. Upon starting as an attending psychiatrist at Stony Brook, he helped launch the departments first ever outpatient psychiatry clerkship for medical students in the Stony Brook School of Medicine. He currently serves as the Interim Medical Director of Outpatient Services for the Department Psychiatry, in addition to the Director of Outpatient Medical Student Education. Dr. Sherman has a passion for teaching, and devotes much of his time to providing didactics and clinical supervision for Stony Brook resident physicians and medical students. He treats primarily adults in the outpatient department at Stony Brooks Commack location, and has a wide clinical scope of practice which includes mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, ADHD, and developmental disorders. He also allocates time assisting in the hospitals Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), where he provides emergency psychiatric evaluation and care for both children and adults in crisis. He is currently a member of the American Psychiatric Association.
