About Olga Selioutski

About

I obtained Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stony Brook University. My first child was born at Stony Brook hospital. There is a lot I am grateful for to this University.
I chose Neurology as my specialty because of its broad field and opportunities to further develop additional subspecialty expertise, research skills, and apply my knowledge in teaching. Anyone can find “home” in Neurology, whether it is clinical, research or teaching work either in the inpatient or outpatient setting. My subspecialty is Neurophysiology and Epilepsy, a chronic neurological condition that requires establishing a longitudinal rapport with the patients.  Bringing new forms of treatment is paramount for patients whose epilepsy was considered incurable not long ago.  Patients are eager to learn about new developments and new modalities in their disease management. Many are finally able to have a sense of control over their neurological condition. My research and clinical expertise help me broaden treatment options for my patients while guiding them in decision making with honesty and respect for their autonomy. Most of my research efforts are dedicated to the EEG in critically ill populations. My other interests include healthcare disparities in patients with epilepsy.
One of my aspirations is bridging the gap between academic institutions and community-based organizations (CBO). I believe these collaborative efforts can tremendously benefit our patients. For instance, 2 years ago we put together a team of volunteers to teach children with epilepsy how to swim, something that was forbidden to many due to the fear of having a seizure in the water.  The success of this program would not be possible without joined efforts of academic institution and CBO. And yes, the kids did learn how to survive in the water!
