About
My first nursing job after graduating from nursing school was on the neurology floor. On the neurology floor, was cared for all types of neurology patients including multiple sclerosis, Gillian barre, and stroke where I was an RN in the stroke unit caring for acute stroke patients. After 4 years, I transferred to the SICU where I care for critically ill patients, many of whom had neurological problems. Caring for critically ill patients in the SICU, taught me compassion working with patients and their families. After graduating from NP school, I left Stony Brook to work in primary care for 2 years where I honed my general clinician skills. I eventually made the decision to return to an acute care setting and found my way back to Stony Brook and back to neurology working as a stroke NP on the floor I started my nursing journey on.
As a nurse and now a nurse practitioner, I am sensitive to patient’s needs, considering the ‘whole’ patient and not just the problem that brought them to the hospital.
I have a long history with Stony Brook University which started in 1985. In the 80’s I was a student of marine science and received a master's degree in marine environmental sciences. I then worked for a funding agency that supported research, education, and outreach for New York’s coastal and Great Lakes Resources for 10 years. Once I determined that I wanted to be a nurse, I was accepted and graduated from Stony Brook’s accelerated BSN program. After 4 years as a floor nurse, I then decided I wanted to be an NP and was accepted and graduated from Stony Brook’s NP Master’s program. As can be seen, I have a very long history with Stony Brook University in the capacity of a student, grant coordinator, nurse, and now nurse practitioner.
On a personal note, I am a potter and love working with clay! I actually started my pottery hobby at Stony Brook. I actually teach wheel pottery in the local community. I’m also a cyclist and enjoy taking cycling-themed vacations to different countries – what a great way to experience a new city and culture
