About Robert A Schwaner

About

Hello, my name is Robert Schwaner, Vice Chair of Clinical Systems Affairs for Emergency Medicine. I am board certified in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology. I have practiced within emergency medicine for over 20 years now. I feel privileged to have chosen a field that I'm still as excited to work in as the day I finished my residency. The daily variety, volume and unknowns of the emergency department provide for me the excitement and challenge that never allows me to be bored but rather causes me to stay focused and dedicated to providing my patients the best possible care. During the last twenty years, new innovations for various disease states have constantly changed and lead to improved health and outcomes for our patients. It is great to be the first person in the hospital to begin these treatments. Many patients that would have been admitted for further care in the hospital, even 10 years ago, are now able to be home safely with their families. Vast opportunities at Stony Brook have allowed me to take on additional roles to satisfy my additional interests in toxicology, leadership, and teaching. Further roles that I serve at Stony Brook include as our department’s Medical Director, Chief of Toxicology, and as unit director in the medical school’s pharmacology course. When I am outside of the hospital, you can often find me on the soccer field with my wife and boys or enjoying the many beaches and water activities on Long Island.
