Sarah R Pestieau, MD

After graduating from Stanford University in biomedical engineering, I went to medical school and then residency at Stony Brook Hospital. I started working as a hospitalist in 2010 and obtained a master's in public health from Stony Brook in 2017. I always wanted to become an internist and not specialize in any organ system, so I would care for people in a holistic way. My multicultural background and passion for global health has led me to work in all sorts of environments and cultures, including rural hospitals plagued with malaria in Central African Republic and Ivory Coast, refugee camps in Ethiopia near the Sudanese border, clinics in Pakistan and Syria, and a first-class hospital in Colombia. Caring for all types of patients in different environments has taught me to adapt, ask the right questions, and understand my patients and families on a deeper level. I am fluent in 3 languages, which helps me communicate with a broader population, which is very practical working at Stony Brook Hospital. My patients really appreciate when I don't have to call anyone to translate, and can speak directly to them, listen to them, care for them, and advocate for them without needing any intermediates. I have a lot of experience and look forward to working with this growing institution where I feel at home, and want to see improving on all fronts each and every day.
