About Veronica Tapia

Veronica Tapia, MD (former last name Murphy, pronouns she/her) is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, Child Division, in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. Dr. Tapia completed medical school and general psychiatry residency at SUNY Downstate Medical in Brooklyn, NY. She then completed her fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hoftra/Northwell. Dr. Tapia spend many years working with transgender adolescents during her training: first during various electives throughout her medical school and residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and subsequently during her fellowship training at Zucker Hillside Hospital. After completing fellowship, Dr. Tapia worked as psychiatrist and acting Clinical Director at two outpatient school based day treatment programs in Yonkers, NY through Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center. At the two programs Dr. Tapia cared and treated children from ages 5 to 18, many of which had severe ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and conduct disorders. At Stony Brook Medical Dr. Tapia is involved in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health's Diversity and Inclusion Committee (previously a co-chair), participates in the Department's work group for Spanish-Speaking Bilingual and Bicultural Care, which is involved in the creation of the Conexiones Clinic (the developing Spanish Speaking sub-clinic for our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry department). Dr. Tapia is also one of the founding creators of the developing GAIN Clinic (the Transgender and Gender Non-Binary collaborative care subclinic for children and adolescents for our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department, in affiliation with our Endocrinology and Adolescent Medicine Departments). Dr. Tapia is personally interested transgender care, cross cultural sensitivity, minority populations, and equitable health care for all. Originally born and raised in Cuenca, Ecuador, she migrated to Queens, NY with her family at a young age and lived there most of her young adult life. Dr. Tapia now lives in Suffolk, NY with her daughter. Dr. Tapia brings a unique perspective to her practice, and is able to communicate fluently in both English and Spanish. This unique perspective also gives Dr. Tapia personal interest in the care of minority populations, cross cultural sensitivity and health care equity for all populations. Dr. Tapia enjoys working with children and adolescents of all ages and backgrounds including the LGBTQI and minority communities, and she has a special interest in treatment of individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD.
